The HK Prize 2023
The Hong Kong Prize is one of Asia’s premier high school contests that offers participants a unique platform to build their writing portfolio and gain exposure in the literary world. Finalists not only stand to win monetary prizes, but also get the opportunity to attend an awards ceremony and gain international recognition. Lawmakers from both parties have nominated pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong for a Nobel Peace Prize, calling them global inspiration in the face of Beijing’s crackdown on freedoms. The campaigners, including Joshua Wong, are among those facing prosecution under the controversial National Security Law imposed by the Chinese government, a move that US lawmakers say has sparked worldwide outrage.
Wong, along with Jimmy Lai, Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan and Gwyneth Ho have been named by nine lawmakers in the US Congress. They are among the many activists rounded up by China since 16 June. In a letter to the Nobel Committee, the lawmakers praised the activists’ “fervent dedication and tireless efforts” in pushing for democracy.
A Guilty Conscience and The Goldfinger both won a series of awards at the 2023 Hong Kong Film Awards, with the latter scooping best actor for Donnie Yen. Edko Films’ legal drama won top honours in the feature film category, while Emperor Motion Pictures’ crime thriller grabbed best cinematography and art direction awards. Moreover, the film won prizes in a host of other categories, making it the biggest winner of the night.
In the art sector, the hk prize 2023 – ‘Colours of Humanity’ Art Prize, established in 2022 by Justice Centre Hong Kong and co-hosted by EU Office in Hong Kong and Macao and Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, celebrates and rewards visionary submissions. The competition sparks dialogue and reflection through an exhibition of shortlisted works at the Goethe-Gallery & Black Box Studio alongside a programme of thought-provoking panels and an award night.
This year’s HK Prize is open to scientists who are based in Hong Kong, Macau or the Greater Bay Area (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao). Scientists must have made significant contributions to society through their research, with up to five winners being selected for each of the three themes: Life & Health; New Materials & New Energy; and Advanced Manufacturing. The winner of the Life & Health theme will receive HK$1 million in cash and will be invited to join a panel of distinguished scientists for an interdisciplinary discussion on the latest developments in their field at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
