When you think of Hong Kong, swimming pools probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. But the city is actually loaded with picturesque pools, including the world’s highest pool on the 118th floor of a skyscraper and an infinity pool at a luxury hotel, as well as public water parks with slides and funky fountains.

When the mercury starts to climb, hit one of the many hongkong pools in town for a refreshing dip and some much-needed cooldown. These public pools are cheap as chips, too. Adult admission is just HK$17 during the week and HK$19 on weekends (and public holidays), and kids under three are free.

There are also tons of water play zones, too, so bring the little ones along for a splashing good time. In fact, most of these pools have kiddie pools and water slides, which means that the whole family can spend a day in the cool waters without breaking the bank.

Most of the pools are open from early morning to late night. You can even go for a swim on a cloudy day, since Hong Kong has a lot of indoor pools. But if you’re planning on spending a long time in the pool, be sure to pack snacks, sunscreen and waterproof phone cases to avoid dehydration. And don’t forget an Octupus card, which is required for all MTR and public swimming pool entries.

The influx of mainland Chinese swimmers has been a boon for the LCSD, but it’s also caused some problems. The number of pool closures due to contaminated water with vomit and feces has reached the highest level in six years. It’s also led to a shortage of lifeguards, with some pools closing lanes and facilities reserved for swimming classes.

Some lawmakers are worried about the safety of swimmers. The government has reportedly considered outsourcing the management of some of its public swimming pools, but Chau Siu-chung said that two trials of this in the past had resulted in “serious management issues” and unqualified individuals being substituted for lifeguards.

For a truly memorable pool experience, head to the breezy rooftop of Harbour Grand Kowloon for a refreshing swim with views of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong’s stunning skyline. The unique, glass-walled pool area is surrounded by lounge chairs and has a whirlpool and bar for the ultimate relaxing getaway. The rooftop pool is only open to guests staying at the hotel, but you can book a staycation package at the property through Klook to enjoy this pool and a whole host of other hotel perks. Just remember to pack a swimsuit and your Octupus card!
