The object of the game is to bet on which hand will come closer to nine than the opposing hand. The winning hand is the one that has a final point total closest to nine. All numbered cards two through nine count as face value, while jacks, queens, and kings count as zero and aces count as one. Cards that add up to more than 10 must drop the first numeral (for example, a seven and eight card would result in a total of 15, which is dropped to three).
Players can place bets on either the player or the banker hand. The player is considered the best hand and has the lowest house edge. A tie bet, however, has a much higher house edge and is therefore avoided by most serious players. The game is played with 8 decks of cards, which are shuffled by the dealer and placed in a dealing shoe. The cards are dealt out in pairs, and the winner is determined by which hand has a total closest to nine.
In a normal round, two cards are dealt for both the player and banker hands. If the first pair of cards has a total of 8 or 9, this is known as a “natural win.” All bets are paid out, and the game is over. If the second pair of cards has a total of 9 or 8, the banker must draw a third card. The banker must also draw a third card if the first pair of cards have a total of 7 or less.
In the normal course of play, the banker hand wins around 45.8% of the time, while the player hand wins 44.6% of the time. Ties occur 9.6% of the time, and since they have a lower payout than bets on the player or banker hands, it is better to avoid them when possible. In addition, if you bet on the banker, you’ll have to pay a 5% commission to the casino. If you bet on the player side, this fee is waived.
