The Hong Kong pro-democracy protests that erupted in June were widely seen as one of the largest mass demonstrations in human history. Several US lawmakers, across party lines, have now nominated the movement for the Nobel Peace Prize. They praised the demonstrators for being a global inspiration in the face of Beijing’s crackdown.
Meanwhile, the 2023/24 season’s domestic horse racing prize money is set to increase by eight percent – from Griffin races to Class 1 and the Four-Year-Old Classic series. Hong Kong’s oldest film actor, 85-year-old Patrick Tse, has won his first best actor award at the 2019 Hong Kong Film Awards for his portrayal of a hitman-turned-noodle maker in black comedy Time. The veteran matinee idol is the oldest best actor winner in Hong Kong Film Awards’ history and has been hailed for his contribution to Hong Kong’s cinema industry over the decades.
In the field of science, a researcher from the University of Hong Kong has been awarded this year’s BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE, worth HK$2 million. Professor Dennis Yuk Ming LO has discovered that fetal DNA is present in maternal blood, a breakthrough that can be used for prenatal testing of trisomy 21 and other genetic disorders.
The Charter is designed to promote scientific and standardized management of the BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY InNOVATION PRIZE, and to ensure that the selection process is conducted independently and objectively. It lays down that candidates must support the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and be of high moral standing.
BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY innovaton prize
The inaugural BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Innovation Prize, launched by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation, is a merit-based research grant that will reward individuals or teams of scientists whose scientific work on technological innovation and transformation was carried out primarily in Hong Kong or universities, industry-education-research bases or institutes established by Hong Kong higher education institutions and located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The prize carries a cash award of up to HK$3,000,000 and a trophy. No more than five persons or teams can be rewarded in each award category in any one year.
