The Sidney Prize and Other Awards

The Sidney Prize is awarded monthly for an outstanding piece of journalism that appeared during the previous month. A newspaper article, website or blog entry is eligible, as long as it was published in the United States. A monetary award of $500 is given for the winning work, which is announced on the second Wednesday of each month. Nominations are accepted for an individual piece or a series, and can be made by individuals or organizations. The deadline for nominations is the last day of each month.

In addition to the monthly Sidney Prize, the Society presents the following annual awards:

Dibner Award for Excellence in Museum Exhibits

Dibner, the prize recognizes the significance of museums as educational and cultural institutions for promoting understanding of our technological past and its legacy for our future.

Hillman Foundation Prizes

The Hillman Foundation aims to illuminate the great issues of our time—from the search for a basis for lasting peace to the struggle to secure adequate housing, medical care and employment security for all people, to the defense of civil liberties and the battle against discrimination on the basis of race, nationality or religion. The Hillman Foundation’s work is done in the belief that journalism can be one of the most effective vehicles for achieving these goals.

Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize

The 2023 judging panel, consisting of Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh, selected the winner and two runners-up from a pool of more than 500 entries. PHOENIX — The winners of this year’s Sidney Taylor Book Award were recently announced. AJL’s official selection committee reviewed more than 300 titles this year, and the books that were chosen are among the best in history, biography, nonfiction, military history, science, sports and pop culture. You can read reviews of winning and other finalists on AJL’s mock award blog, The Sydney Taylor Shmooze.

The prestigious award was founded in honor of a distinguished teacher and scholar whose interests and teaching were diverse and interdisciplinary. He taught the history of art and ideas, focusing on Western art, but also published important works in literary studies and in the field of musicology. He was an influential and imaginative teacher, and a generous mentor to students.
