The Game of Roullete
The game of Roullete, or Roulette, is a casino game in which a ball is dropped onto a revolving wheel with numbered slots. The gamblers place bets on which number the ball will land. If you correctly guess the number, your bet pays out and your chips go back into play. Depending on the type of bet, the winnings can be anywhere from 1 to 35 times your stake.
While fanciful stories abound about the origin of Roulette, its present form probably dates from 17th century France. It may have combined elements of the French games hoca and portique and of the Italian game Biribi. The roulette wheel consists of a solid, slightly convex disk with metal partitions or frets, called pockets by roulette croupiers. Thirty-six of these compartments, painted alternately red and black, are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. A green compartment on European-style wheels carries the sign 0 and on American roulette wheels two green ones on opposite sides carry the signs 0 and 00.
