Roullete, French for “little wheel”, is a casino game that involves placing bets on various numbers and groupings of numbers on a roulette table (aka layout). Players can also bet on the color red or black and whether a number is odd or even. Unlike some other casino games, roulette does not have any house edge.

There are many theories on the origins of this game, including that it was invented by 17th-century physicist Blaise Pascal as he attempted to create a machine that could demonstrate perpetual motion. However, there is no evidence that this is true. In any case, the game gained traction in Paris and other European casinos as it evolved from earlier board games like hoca and portique. The roulette wheel that we know and love today was first used in France around 1790. It consists of a solid wooden disk that is slightly convex, with thirty-six compartments painted alternately red and black and numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. A 0 and a double-zero are placed on opposite sides of the wheel, which was added to avoid confusion with an English wheel that had no zeros.

The best way to make money playing roulette is to correctly predict where the ball will land when it spins. This can be done by analyzing the pattern of winning and losing bets and placing your chips accordingly. Generally, outside bets are cheaper to place and have a higher chance of hitting than inside bets. If you do happen to hit a number, be sure to tip your dealer! They have a lot of work to do in preparing the wheel and table for each round, so don’t forget to give them a little extra if you win.
