There are numerous people around the world working hard to make an impactful difference in society. These individuals deserve to be recognized and inspired. A sidney prize can help them do just that. These awards have unique requirements and guidelines that one should be familiar with before applying.
The Sydney Peace Prize is given annually to an individual or organization who has demonstrated a commitment to peace with justice and respect for diversity. This year’s award was presented to Nazanin Boniadi, an Iranian actress and human rights activist who is working tirelessly to advance women’s rights in her country. The City of Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, praised her efforts, saying, “Nazanin’s activism is helping to turn outrage into action, and we are thrilled to award her with the 2023 Sydney Peace Prize.”
Each year, the Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize seeks outstanding original short fiction themed loosely around the notion of travel. The winning story receives $5,000 and is published in both online and print formats, with two runners-up each receiving $750. The judges of the 2023 prize – Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop, and Sara Saleh – reviewed over 500 entries to create a shortlist of eight pieces. The winning entry, Claire Aman’s ‘Who Rattles the Night?’, will be published in the September issue of Overland.
Founded in 1854, the Sydney Medal is Australia’s oldest literary award, and was initially awarded as a reward for the best essay addressing a nominated question. The Medal has become a major event in the Sydney literary calendar and is supported by an endowment from WC Wentworth. The Committee reserves the right to award a joint prize in cases where there are two outstanding essays of equal merit.
In addition to the Sydney Prize, there are several other notable awards given out in Sydney. The Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award, for instance, is an annual award given to an emerging Australian filmmaker who has shown promise in the art of short film. The Sydney UNESCO City of Film Award is another prestigious honor that recognizes innovative and high-impact work in the field of filmmaking.
There are also a number of sidney prizes that honor the achievements of journalists. The Hillman Foundation’s Sydney Prize, for example, is awarded monthly to a journalist whose piece showcases the power of investigative reporting and deep storytelling to promote social justice. Past winners of the award have included Rose Arce, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Ed Yong.
The MAK Halliday Postgraduate Research Prize is awarded annually in memory of the founder of the department of linguistics at the University of Sydney. The prize is designed to recognize excellence in the study of language and aims to recognise the best student in their third or fourth year of studies. In order to be eligible, students must have a high overall average mark and have submitted a number of papers or conference presentations during their degree. The winner will be selected based on the quality of their work and the level of professionalism they display.
