The first domino to hit a tile that has been set up is called the lead and determines which direction the domino chain will travel. The order of play may vary among different games. In general, the player to the right of the lead begins by placing a tile in front of his or her hand. Then the next player to the right plays a domino on the lead and so on until all players have finished playing their tiles.
Some domino games have scoring rules that depend on the number of pips remaining in the losing player’s hands at the end of a hand or the game. The winning partners in these games are those whose total number of pips is the least. This scoring method is often referred to as counting and byeing.
While some games of domino are limited to the basic 91-tile double-12 set, others have extended sets that allow for a greater number of unique combinations of ends. These include the double-nine, double-15, and double-18 sets.
