Sidney Cox Prize For Undergraduate Writing

In order to perpetuate in some small way the generative influence which the late Sidney Cox exerted over hundreds of Dartmouth students both in and out of his classes, a committee of his friends has been soliciting funds with a view to establishing an annual prize for that undergraduate writing which best meets those high standards of originality and integrity which he always set for himself and for them. As a result of the generous response, about $1500 is now in hand. Further contributions are invited, especially from those friends who have not been approached and from men interested in the arts at Dartmouth. Contributions should be sent to the Committee at 1 Occom Ridge, Hanover, N.H.

The Sydney Prize is awarded to an outstanding research paper on a topic relating to private law, including contracts, torts, property, and constitutional law. This prize is a joint initiative of the Project on Private Law at Harvard and the firm Roberts & Holland. The prize is worth up to $5,000.

Scientists from the University of Sydney have excelled at this year’s Eureka Awards – Australia’s ‘Science Oscars’. Two Horizon Fellows, Professor Kate Jolliffe and Dr Mengyu Li, have received Eureka prizes for their research, while the Sensory Conservation Team led by Prof Peter Banks won the prestigious Eureka Prize for School Science.

Molecular biologist Sidney Altman shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas R Cech for their discovery that RNA – long believed to be a carrier of genetic codes between parts of cells – actively aids chemical reactions within living cells, triggering and speeding up essential processes in living systems. Altman and Cech’s revolutionary work paved the way for new fields of scientific research and biotechnology.

The Sidney Hillman Foundation awards monetary prizes to journalists, writers and other public figures who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in service of the common good. The Hillman Prizes have been awarded since 1950.

In addition to the monetary prizes, winners will have their work published in SHOT. A citation of their winning essay will appear in the next issue of the magazine and the author will receive a certificate.

If a submission takes up the voice or experience of a marginalised community or identity, we ask that authors identify themselves as a member of that group. This is to enable us to accurately reflect the diversity of experiences, views and voices in our publications.
