Why Sydney Pools Aren’t Always Accessible

Located on the east coast of Australia, Sydney is home to some of the most stunning public pools in the country. These amazing aquatic centres offer calm, peaceful respite in winter and the perfect place to be during summer. These stunning Sydney pools are also a great place to spend time with family and friends, whether you’re a local or just visiting.

Zoe Baker learned to appreciate the simple charms of the city’s public swimming pools on childhood trips with her grandmother at Granville swimming centre. It was a “basic big blue rectangle”, she recalls, with patches of grass and concrete on which to roll out the towel and a kiosk selling hot chips and ice blocks. “It was a place to come together, and the community really cared about it,” she says. “You don’t need all the bells and whistles.”

The beauty of these pool spaces embodies values of equality, diversity, tolerance and mateship, she adds. But sadly, these swimming pools are not always accessible in the same way to all of the people who need them, particularly those from marginalised communities.

According to research by the Australian Council on Social Service, around 40% of Sydney’s population are living below the poverty line and have limited or no access to private swimming pools. These families are often the most vulnerable in our society, and it is crucial that they have access to safe and affordable places to swim. The problem is that these public pools are often regarded as unaffordable, especially for those with low incomes.

Before you decide to build your own swimming pool, it is a good idea to find out what the local planning laws are and ask about any other issues that may be relevant. For example, some areas have heritage orders or preservation orders that prevent the removal of trees, and this could affect where you can build your pool.

It is also important to choose a pool builder with experience and insurance. Make sure they are registered with the Home Building Compensation Fund and that their coverage covers the entire period of construction as well as any warranty periods. It’s also a good idea to get a detailed quote and view examples of the builder’s previous work.
