How a Sidney Prize Can Make a Difference

The Sydney Peace Prize is given annually to an individual or organization who has demonstrated a commitment to peace with justice and respect for diversity. This year’s award was presented to Nazanin Boniadi, an Iranian actress and human rights activist who is working tirelessly to advance women’s rights in her country. The City of Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, praised her efforts, saying, “Nazanin’s activism is helping to turn outrage into action, and we are thrilled to award her with the 2023 Sydney Peace Prize.”
Each year, the Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize seeks outstanding original short fiction themed loosely around the notion of travel. The winning story receives $5,000 and is published in both online and print formats, with two runners-up each receiving $750. The judges of the 2023 prize – Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop, and Sara Saleh – reviewed over 500 entries to create a shortlist of eight pieces. The winning entry, Claire Aman’s ‘Who Rattles the Night?’, will be published in the September issue of Overland.
